What to prepare for your trip in Mekong Delta Vietnam?
Normally, when you decide where to go on your holidays, you should consider what to prepare and what to do in your intended travel destinations. The same situation as in Mekong Delta area, where owns favorable natural conditions, mild climate and fruit seasons all year round, we will recommend you about what should bring and prepare for a best Mekong Delta travel.
1 – Personal luggage
Mekong Delta area is characterized by mild climate, cool, windy so when you travel here, you should not bring warm clothes like travelling in cold regions. Casual travel clothing like T-shirt, jean, short is recommended to bring here and a thin jacket as well to avoid harsh sunlight in the afternoon in this land. And especially because of the topography of this western waterway, you should not bring luxurious items or white items because they might be dirty or damaged. It is highly recommended that tourists bring comfortable walking shoes and lightweight long pants for both normal tour and Buddhist temple excursions because women will need to cover their shoulders and knees when visiting sacred places.
In addition, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, bathing suit, extra socks, and mosquito repellant, and of course, camera with charger and extra batteries are also should-bring stuffs in this promising trip.
2 – Transportation
If you join in tours, normally travel companies will arrange the transportation for you. It is often travelling by bus, if you require they will arrange the flight for you.
If you want to travel by yourself, there are some ways here:
By road: Mekong Delta is about 4-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh and Can Tho so it is rather easy to access this region by road although sometimes the road is quite crowed due to vehicles overload on this main route. You can catch the bus at western bus station in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh city to go down to Mekong Delta area.
By boat: Mekong Delta Vietnam has special river system running through most of provinces so you can choose to visit here by waterway. However this way attracts fewer tourists because of long moving time. There used to be hydrofoil connections from Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho, heading to Can Tho in around 4 hours, but this option does not exist anymore. Alternatives are speed boat transfers, or cruises will be the better choices for those who are interested in unspoiled nature, from Cai Be to Can Tho or backward.
By plane: There are some flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Rach Gia (the place that can be reached by boat or plane from Phu Quoc) and also between Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc Island where tourists can then start Mekong Delta tour from here. However, the price is higher than by road and by boat and you have to check the availability first.
Mekong Delta is also a natural passageway from Southern Vietnam to Cambodia, which can be entered through mainland and/or by river. It is not so difficult to get a visa to Cambodia (but not for all entrance points), but you also need to obtain Vietnam visas in advance.
You can travel from Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, to Chau Doc on a boat-bus journey; or you can also enter at the border crossing on the way from Kampot in Southern Cambodia to Ha Tien since bus stops are also now available between Phnom Penh and Can Tho.
