The disease was first identified in 2019 in Wuhan, China, and has since spread globally, resulting in the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. Common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Muscle pain, sputum production and sore throat are less common. While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some progress to severe pneumonia and multi-organ failure.

As of March 20, 2020, the number of people infected with COVID-19 in the world has exceeded 245,000 in 181 countries and territories with more than 10,000 deaths. Responses to protect public health worldwide include: travel restrictions, blockade and quarantine, curfew, event cancellation and school closure.

The Covid-19 pandemic is seriously affecting the global economy with extremely serious consequences.

2.The effects of the Covid 19 on Vietnam’s tourism industry

The World Tourism Organization has just ranked Vietnam as the 7th fastest growing tourist destination in the world (up 3 places compared to last year). Since the Covid epidemic, tourists have been dominated by fears of the disease, which has negatively affected airlines, hotels, tour operators, restaurants, shops, transport companies, etc.

Room capacity of hotels in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City has been reduced to 50% and more. Key resort destinations such as Sapa, Da Nang, Cam Ranh, Nha Trang or travel companies in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi … also recorded a terrible decline in capacity.

Normal days, Ha Long Bay receives from 6,000 to 8,000 passengers /day, this number decreased very rapidly in the past 2 months. Currently, Ha Long Bay has issued a written notice to suspend the reception of visitors to the end of March. Therefore, all businesses with ships operating on Ha Long Bay have suspended business activities, welcomed passengers and waited for new notifications from the Bay Management Board for April.

The type of travel that combines conferences and seminars (MICE) is also strongly affected as many multinational companies have canceled foreign tours for their employees.

Vietnamese airlines have also had more difficulties with a series of canceled or restricted flights.

Currently, tourism businesses are focusing on preventing and combating the Covid 19 epidemic as directed by the Ministry of Health and relevant agencies. Good prevention efforts will also help to build Vietnam’s tourism image in the eyes of international and domestic tourists on a safe destination.
