Luxury Travel in Vietnam
Summer 2019 is just around the corner. If you haven’t booked your holiday yet for this summer or autumn (high season in Vietnam is from October till end of April), here are a few ideas for “affordable” luxury … I am not entitled to discuss anyone’s budget, but the mentioned resorts, apartments or cruise are quite unforgettable experiences … Honeymoon pops into my mind often when I visit these kind of accommodation.
Luxury travel today is defined less by thread count and Michelin stars and more by access to the people, places and experiences that represent all that is authentic about a destination. There’s no denying that comfort factors still apply and high standards of accommodation and dining will always feature on the luxury traveller’s wish list. However, today’s luxury traveller seeks more depth of understanding and immersion into local culture than ever before. People don’t just want to see – they want to participate.
For me luxury is not about the marble bath-tub or the gold taps, but about the location, the hosting, the guides. The definition of luxury travel to me is to undertake a new experience and immerse oneself in a new destination whilst indulging in the very best levels of personal and attentive service, lavish and sumptuous accommodation, exquisite and unrivalled levels of gastronomy and informative and educational guides. It is travel without stress, pressure of time or daily routine, where your every need is pre-empted and your every expectation is met and exceeded.

Victoria Can Tho Resort
On the banks of one of the world’s greatest and most mysterious waters in Vietnam’s ‘Deep South’, Victoria Can Tho Resort is considered as the flagship of Victoria Hotels & Resorts in the Mekong Delta — and first luxury hotel in the region. Amid bustling floating markets, myriad of canals and vibrant green rice paddies, the splendid colonial-style hotel is set in magnificent gardens on the banks of the Hau River. To experience the pulse of delta life, sunrise and sunset cruises to the local floating market aboard the resort’s private traditional sampan, the Mekong Princess, is the highlight. This quiet retreat lies on the banks of the Hau River, at a distance of 170 km (3.5 hours) from Ho Chi Minh City. Can Tho Airport is only 13 km (25 minutes) from the resort.
Victoria Chau Doc Hotel
The Victoria Chau Doc is one of the jewels of the Mekong and is the Queen of the town. Since she opened, the Hotel has stood as a landmark of the town and a beacon of civilisation on the journey between Cambodia and the Delta.
Situated near the Cambodian border, Chau Doc is a six hour drive (280km) from Ho Chi Minh City with the closest airports being Can Tho (3 hours) and Ho Chi Minh City. It is also accessible to and from Phnom Penh by speedboat (5 hours). The Victoria Chau Doc Hotel is located on the Bassac River, a tributary of the Mekong River. Its French colonial architecture and style is unique in the region, and together with its warm service makes it a mandatory stop en route to or from Cambodia.
The Victoria Chau Doc was built with the future of Mekong tourism in mind, a time when elegant cruisers would slowly ply the route from Phnom Penh to Chau Doc and beyond.
Victoria Sapa Resort & Spa
Sapa is a very special place.
The small town itself was built up under French colonial administration as a cool hill station providing respite from the heat and humidity of the lowlands. As the town has matured however, it has become the focal point and meeting place for the many tribal people who live in the surrounding mountains, often following a way of life unchanged in centuries.
Nestled amongst the mountains of Sapa in Northern Vietnam lies the Victoria Sapa Resort & Spa, modelled after a traditional mountain chalet. The resort’s stone and wood construction blends seamlessly with the surrounding environment, overlooking Indochina’s highest peak, Mount Fansipan.
Victoria offers guests 2 exclusive transportation options:
– The Victoria Express Train, an 8-hour overnight journey in a stylish two or four berth cabin.
– The Victoria Sapa Coach, a limousine coach with 24 seats, wifi on board, taking just 5 hours by day.
Le Bassac cruise :
TransMékong is a family company established in 2003 in Cần Thơ, in the heart of the Mekong delta, by a franco-vietnamese couple. We both had a few years’ prior experience managing projects and SMEs and the urge to escape from it all. We originally bought the hull of an existing rice barge, stripped it bare and built Bassac I, with which we learned much about what building and running a cruise boat entails. Since then we designed ourselves and built Bassac II and III and the Mystic sampans according to the same tradition.
The Bassac takes you into the greener areas of the Mekong delta, overnight on the river and into the middle of the life about the river. They are entirely built of wood in the Mekong delta and according to the local marine traditions, and adapted for discovery cruises, open to outside and offering an immediate contact with the green surrounding of the ship. Eating well is mission-critical on a cruise, and on every trip we offer our passengers to discover classic Vietnamese cuisine at noon, delta specialties in the evening and a well-appointed western meal for breakfast. We offer meals cooked and baked afresh including breakfast’s bread and pastry. As the Bassac have their own galley, they are very reactive to meet the needs and tastes of your passengers, even in case a surprise cake is de rigueur.
