Sa Pa is a significant historical and cultural site located in Lào Cai Province in northwestern Vietnam. It was originally inhabited by unknown peoples who left behind hundreds of petroglyphs in the valley, primarily consisting of lines. Experts believe these engravings date back to the 15th century and represent local land records. Today, Sa Pa is home to more than 200 boulders featuring ancient carvings, and the “Area of Old Carved Stone in Sa Pa” has been on UNESCO’s tentative list since 1997. The region was later populated by several highland ethnic minorities, including the Hmong, Yao (Dao), Giáy, Pho Lu, and Tày, who still reside in Sa Pa today. In contrast, the Kinh (lowland Vietnamese) never originally settled in this high valley, which lies beneath Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan), the tallest peak in Vietnam at 3,143 meters. Sa Pa town is situated at the head of a stunning valley filled with magnificent rice terraces that have been cultivated for centuries. The scenery is breathtaking, with winding roads leading down to the valley floor, white-water rivers flowing through the rice fields, and lush green mountains stretching into the distance. Mount Fansipan, the highest peak in the region, dominates the jagged ridge line high above the town. Sa Pa is an excellent destination for trekking, hiking, and exploring local culture and cuisine.
